Flash Flooding in Somerdale, NJ: Romantic Rescue Amidst Storm

Somerdale, NJ – Intense rainfall caused notable flash flooding in Somerdale, New jersey, transforming streets into waterways and prompting rescues. One resident, Andrew Gershman, described a moment amidst the chaos that reminded him of a romantic comedy, a “meet-cute,” when a woman was rescued from her flooded vehicle.

“It just came out of nowhere,” Gershman stated, recounting the sudden and severe downpour that lasted approximately twenty minutes. Cell phone footage captured the extent of the flooding along the 400 block of North Warwick Road, which Gershman noted was the worst flooding he had witnessed at the end of his street.

Amidst the disruption, Gershman observed the rescue of a woman from her car.He found the situation lighthearted, noting that after she was safely out, she began to laugh. “So I realized she was safe, and at that point it was like a romantic comedy kind of moment,” he shared, adding, “I thought it was cute.”

The storms dissipated as quickly as they arrived, leaving behind minimal evidence an hour later. “You just got debris on the sides, that’s about it,” said fellow resident Alani Hernandez. Hernandez expressed gratitude that the flooding did not breach homes, stating, “We’re lucky it didn’t go into the house if it kept on raining, it would’ve.” The neighborhood is now characterized by the sound of drains clearing the remaining water.

The severe weather also impacted Chester, Pennsylvania, where flash flooding inundated Tilghman Street and West 2nd Street. Reports indicate a driver was stranded next to his vehicle while awaiting police assistance. Further incidents occurred at 9th Street and Meadow Lane, where another vehicle was affected, and flooding extended for several blocks along Hartwick.

Residents in Somerdale, accustomed to heavy rainfall, expressed surprise at the intensity and speed of this particular storm. Gershman highlighted the community spirit, expressing thankfulness for living in a neighborhood where mutual aid is provided, even when streets become streams.
