Flash Flood Emergency Issued for Hawaii Big Island as Hurricane Lala Approaches

August 17, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Hurricane Lala weakened after lashing Hawaii’s Big Island, prompting a flash flood emergency for Naalehu in Kaʻū, according to the National Weather Service. The storm, which had threatened the islands as a Category 1 hurricane, now shifts westward, but its remnants continue to strain local infrastructure and emergency systems.

Hurricane Lala’s Impact: A Direct Hit on the Big Island

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for Naalehu in Kaʻū as Hurricane Lala moved away from the Big Island. The storm, which had intensified to 75 mph winds before weakening, marked the first potential direct hurricane strike on the Big Island in 155 years, per nypost.com.

Jon Corbett, a Kihei resident, noted that the recent repair of a flooded road near Fred’s was something he hoped would handle the storm, according to Hawaii News Now.

Historical Context: A Rare Event with Long-Term Implications

Lala’s trajectory, however, has been less predictable, with forecasters initially warning of a potential “first hit in 155 years” before the storm weakened. The Big Island’s declaration of a state of emergency on August 15 highlighted the urgency of preparations, as residents braced for 10–20 inches of rain, with some areas facing up to 25 inches, according to nypost.com.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen stated that crews were “ready for working overtime” to mitigate damage, while Governor Josh Green warned residents to “stay safe and exercise caution on the roads.”

Community Response: Sandbags, Supplies, and Legal Preparations

Residents across the Big Island and Maui engaged in last-minute preparations. In Kailua-Kona, families stacked sandbags alongside businesses like Honu Oceanside in Lahaina, which installed flood barriers to protect customers. At Costco locations in Central Maui, shoppers lined up for water, food, and fuel, while others filled gas tanks to avoid shortages.

In Captain Cook, Shaheer Faltas and his father-in-law, Joe Brosnan, filled sandbags alongside neighbors, reflecting the community’s collective effort, per the Associated Press.

Regional Infrastructure Under Strain

The recent road repair project, completed just days before Lala’s arrival, was noted by resident Jon Corbett.

Looking Ahead: Recovery and Preparedness

As Lala moves westward, the focus shifts to recovery. Maui resident Casey Delaries helped fill sandbags in Kailua-Kona.
