Flags Ordered to Half-Staff Following Assassination of Charlie Kirk
RICHMOND, VA & CHARLESTON, WV – September 11, 2023 – Flags across Virginia, West Virginia, and the United States are being flown at half-staff following the death of charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA. the order, issued by Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and west Virginia Governor Jim Morrisey via email, follows a directive from President Donald Trump honoring Kirk. Flags will remain at half-staff until September 14.
Kirk, 29, succumbed to injuries sustained in a shooting at Utah Valley University on September 10 while on his “American Comeback Tour.” President Trump announced KirkS passing late on September 10.
Born october 14,1993,in Illinois,Kirk founded Turning Point USA at age 18,building the organization into a prominent force in conservative youth outreach. He was also a widely recognized media figure, hosting The Charlie Kirk Show and authoring several books, known for his engagement in civil debates on college campuses nationwide. He was scheduled to continue his tour with dates planned at Virginia Tech and Liberty University in October.
News of Kirk’s assassination prompted swift reactions from Virginia and West Virginia leaders.
“This act is unacceptable and should be universally condemned,” stated Senator Mark Warner on Facebook.
Senator Tim Kaine posted, “I was horrified to hear of this act and am praying for Charlie, his family, the University and our country.”
Congressman Morgan Griffith offered prayers for Kirk, adding, “Attacks based on political motives, from the left or the right, are wrong.”
Governor Youngkin stated, “Suzanne and I are praying for Charlie Kirk and his family.”
Governor Morrisey, in his flag order email, described Kirk as “a fighter, a conservative warrior, and a friend,” and asked citizens to join him and his wife in prayer for Kirk’s family and friends.
Kirk is survived by his wife and two young children. The shooter remains at large.
