First Republic of Korea Medical Volunteers Day Serves 285 Maepo-Eup Residents

First Republic of Korea Medical Volunteers Day Serves 285 Maepo-Eup Residents

October 6, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • The outreach served 285 rural residents, providing internal medicine, neurosurgery, psychiatry, dental care, and oriental medicine services.
  • The underserved Maepo-eup district has a population where residents aged 65 and older exceed 40 percent, while lacking local pharmacies, dental clinics, and oriental medicine offices.

A total of 40 participants, including licensed physicians, dentists, oriental medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians, and health-track university students, staffed the event. Clinicians rotated through lunch shifts to maintain continuous patient care.

Patients completed on-site registration before undergoing nursing pre-examinations, blood pressure checks, and blood glucose monitoring. The diagnostic workflow also incorporated bone mineral density scans and blood laboratory tests to guide clinical referrals. Services spanned internal medicine, neurosurgery, psychiatry, dental examinations, acupuncture, and oriental rehabilitation medicine. Additional interventions included physical therapy, manual therapy, intravenous fluid administration, pain injections, dementia and depression screenings, and direct pharmaceutical dispensations.

Regional Health Disparities in Maepo-eup

The outreach targeted Maepo-eup due to acute local healthcare access barriers, as reported by Chungcheong Domin Ilbo. The administrative district features a senior demographic where adults aged 65 and older account for more than 40 percent of the total population. Despite this high vulnerability to age-associated morbidity, the area lacks local dental clinics, oriental medicine offices, and retail pharmacies, requiring residents to travel outside the township for basic clinical management.

This deployment follows a prior outreach effort conducted in May at the same gymnasium by the Great Central Medical Volunteer Association. That earlier operation utilized 60 medical personnel to examine approximately 500 local residents, establishing a precedent for recurring temporary clinical intervention in the district.

Korea Establishes Medical Volunteers Day on October 4

The commemorative event marked the inaugural “Republic of Korea Medical Volunteers’ Day,” which aligns with the United Nations-designated 2026 International Year of Volunteers. Organizers selected October 4 to invoke the Korean wordplay for the number 1004, which signifies “cheon-sa” or angel.

The initiative was proposed by the Korean Medical Volunteer Association and co-organized alongside the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the National Association of Health and Medical Directors, the Korea National Council of Social Welfare Volunteers, and the Great Central Medical Volunteer Association. Official proceedings featured the presentation of commendation plaques to participating medical volunteers, welcoming remarks, and a formal vision declaration aimed at strengthening regional care networks and expanding sustainable volunteer medicine models across South Korea.

“군민 누구나 필요한 의료서비스를 가까이에서 받을 수 있도록 지역 보건의료와 돌봄 기반을 더욱 촘촘히 다져 나가겠다,” the Danyang County health official said.
