Landmark Approval Brings FIP Treatment to Cats in italy
Ferrara, Italy – A significant advancement in feline healthcare has arrived in Italy with the Ministry of Health’s authorization of GS-441524, an antiviral medication for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). For years, cat owners facing this frequently enough-fatal disease (with a 95% fatality rate without treatment) have been forced to seek unverified and potentially dangerous medications online, often sourced from overseas. Now,a legal and effective treatment option is available.
San Carlo Pharmacy in Ferrara is among the first in Italy to begin producing and distributing GS-441524. Matteo Mantovani, Operations Director of the pharmacy’s galenic laboratory, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “This isn’t a victory for a few, but a step forward for Italian veterinary medicine.” The pharmacy is working closely with the Italian Society of Preparatory Pharmacists and the Ministry of Health to ensure safe and controlled distribution, eliminating the need for owners to rely on unregulated sources.
The process for obtaining the medication requires a veterinarian’s prescription and owner consent.Once received, San Carlo Pharmacy prepares the medication – available in microcapsule or sterile formulation, and free of alcohol and glycol for optimal feline tolerability – within two to three business days. Delivery is available within 48 hours via shipping, or direct pickup is offered for local residents of Ferrara and its province.
In a short period, San Carlo Pharmacy has quickly become a key resource for veterinary clinics and feline sanctuaries in the region. This regulatory change and the commitment of galenic pharmacies like San Carlo represent a turning point, offering a safer and more hopeful future for cats diagnosed with FIP.
