Finland Independence Day Celebration at Finnish Heritage Center

HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – The Finnish American heritage Center is hosting a ⁣festivity of⁣ Finland‘s ​Independence Day this thursday, ⁤marking 108 years ​as the nation gained‍ independence from Russia ⁣on December 6, 1917.

The public is invited to join the commemoration at the center,beginning with a 5:30 p.m.‍ program focused on⁣ engaging younger ⁢generations in the traditions of the holiday.

“Independence Day,Finnish-style,is an event that’s‍ typically laden in tradition adn​ tradition typically means​ older,”‍ said Finnish American Heritage Center Director David ‍Maki. “But the ‍fact⁢ that we ‍have some young people…being part of‌ our program, is realy exciting and it shows that​ what we’re doing​ is lasting for the future.”

Following the hour-long program, an opening reception will be ‍held in the art gallery for ​the ⁤Friends ⁣of Finland exhibit.
