France Climbs to Second in FIFA Ranking, Overtakes Argentina
PARIS - France has risen to second place in teh latest FIFA world ranking, released September 18, 2025, surpassing Argentina after recent World Cup qualifying victories. This marks a significant shift as Les Bleus continue their strong form under didier Deschamps, positioning themselves favorably ahead of crucial upcoming matches.
The ranking update reflects France’s recent successes, including a 2-0 win against Ukraine and a 2-1 victory over Iceland in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Simultaneously occurring, Argentina, despite dominating Venezuela 3-0 in what was Lionel Messi’s final match on home soil, suffered a 1-0 defeat in ecuador. This stumble allowed France to leapfrog the reigning World Cup champions.
Spain currently holds the top spot, followed by France, Argentina, England, Portugal, Brazil, the Netherlands, Belgium, Croatia, and Italy, completing the top ten. Germany experienced a drop, falling from 9th to 12th, while Switzerland climbed two places to 17th.
France is set to continue their qualifying journey in October with a home match against Azerbaijan at the Parc des Princes, followed by an away game against Iceland. Two wins from these matches would further solidify their position at the top of their qualification group.
