FIA Extends F1 Engine Component Allowance Through 2028

FIA Extends F1 Engine Component Allowance Through 2028

October 22, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Formula 1 power unit manufacturers will retain extra component leeway for a second and third year, as the FIA confirmed an allowance introduced for the 2026 season will remain in place through 2027 and 2028, racingnews365.com reported on October 21, 2026.

Engine Allowances Extended Through 2028

Formula 1 transitioned to a heavily revised engine formula this season, keeping the V6 hybrid architecture while dropping the complex MGU-H and placing significantly more emphasis on the MGU-K electrical side. That overhaul brought predictable teething troubles, prompting the FIA and Formula 1 to soften regulations for 2026 by permitting every team one additional unit of each engine component before triggering grid penalties. The rulebook originally stated that this extra unit allowance would apply solely to the 2026 campaign as a bridge through the early regulatory years.

Newly published regulations for the 2027 season outline a change of plan. Article B8.2.3 of the sporting regulations dictates that all drivers may use one additional example of each power unit element listed in Article B8.2.2 across the 2026, 2027, and 2028 seasons alike. Without this extension, each allocation would have dropped by one unit for the upcoming campaigns.

Component Allocations and Power Splits

Throughout 2027 and 2028, competitors are allowed a total of four internal combustion engines, four turbochargers, four exhaust systems, three energy stores, three control electronics units, three MGU-Ks, and six power unit ancillary components. This ongoing exception stems from subtle yet significant tweaks still being made to power unit rules over the coming years.

Out of the total power output, 53 per cent comes from the internal combustion engine, while the electric motor provides the remaining 47 per cent. In 2027, that proportion adjusts to 58/42, prior to reaching a concluding 60/40 balance in 2028. The shift brings higher fuel flow requirements, prompting grand prix distances to be trimmed from 305 kilometres to 290 kilometres starting in 2027, excluding Monaco, which has always run over 260 kilometres. Starting in 2028, grand prix lengths are planned to go back to their standard distance, although the precise car modifications required to achieve this are not yet specified.
