Fenerbahce Star Szymanski‘s Transfer Collapsed After Mourinho Arrival, Agent Reveals
ISTANBUL – A potential transfer for Fenerbahce midfielder Sebastian Szymanski fell through at the last minute due to the arrival of new manager Jose Mourinho, according to the player’s agent, Mariusz Piekarski. the revelation comes after fenerbahce’s 3-1 loss to dinamo Zagreb in the opening match of the UEFA Europa League league stage, where Szymanski scored their only goal.
Piekarski, speaking to Kanal Sportowy, stated that a “very good club” from one of Europe’s top five leagues made an offer for Szymanski, but fenerbahce promptly rejected it, declaring the player was not for sale.
“The offer came from a very good club playing in one of the top 5 leagues in Europe. However, this offer was rejected immediately. Fenerbahce reported that Szymanski is not for sale and therefore the negotiations did not need to last more,” Piekarski explained.
Further complicating matters, a subsequent potential move to a British club competing in the Champions League was also abandoned following Mourinho’s appointment. Piekarski indicated that Mourinho considered Szymanski a key part of his plans.
“Before the Fenerbahce-Feyenoord match, the club told me, ‘Sebastian, Jose Mourinho is a very critically important player. Millions of euros would not be sold even if I heard the words,'” Piekarski said. “After Mourinho leaving the transfer window in Europe was only 3 days more open. We talked to a British club participating in the Champions League, but the transfer was to cancel the decision we wanted.”
Piekarski concluded that Szymanski ultimately became “a victim of his own success,” as mourinho’s high regard for the player effectively ended any chance of a transfer.
