Fally Ipupa Revives Josky Kiambukuta Hit Kita Mata for New Generation
Four decades after its initial release, the classic Congolese rumba track “Kita Mata” by Josky Kiambukuta is finding a brand-new audience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, driven by a high-profile cover from artist Fally Ipupa released in September.
Fally Ipupa Revives a Rumba Classic for Younger Listeners
Originally recorded by the veteran singer Josky Kiambukuta, “Kita Mata” has re-entered the cultural mainstream across the DRC. According to reporting from rfi.fr, the newly released cover version featured on Fally Ipupa’s latest album is currently drawing enthusiastic responses from young listeners in places like the Golf Maisha neighborhood in Lubumbashi.
On streaming platforms, the track has accumulated significant digital traction. Out of the 51 tracks featured on the album XX : Delirium, the modernized version of “Kita Mata” has already surpassed 10 million views on YouTube.
For longtime fans of the genre, the resurgence bridges generations. Frédéric Nawej, a 60-year-old music enthusiast interviewed by rfi.fr, recalled the exact moment he first heard the track play in a Lubumbashi discotheque decades ago, noting that the entire room danced until morning. In contrast, 18-year-old listener Daurelle Kisimba told rfi.fr that she had no prior knowledge of the original recording before discovering Ipupa’s recent version on her phone.
Preserving Congolese Musical Heritage Through Contemporary Production
Music chronicler François Xavier Mutoke explained to rfi.fr that contemporary artists can successfully carry foundational rumba works across generational lines by updating rhythms and beats while retaining core melodies. This stylistic bridge allows newer audiences to connect with foundational pillars of Congolese musical history even when the original lyrics or contexts remain unfamiliar to younger demographics.

As the track continues to circulate across digital networks and local neighborhoods, the ongoing revival demonstrates how major contemporary releases can successfully reintroduce historical catalog items to a demographic discovering the genre for the very first time.
