Users in the UK Will Soon Have a Choice: Pay or See ads
Meta announced today that it will begin offering ad-free subscription options for both Facebook and instagram “over the coming weeks” to users in the United Kingdom. This move provides a direct option for individuals to pay a monthly fee to eliminate advertisements from their feeds.
Pricing Structure: Web vs. Mobile
The subscription will cost £2.99 per month when accessed via the web browser. Though, users subscribing through iOS or Android devices will face a slightly higher fee of £3.99 per month. Meta attributes this price difference to the commission fees levied by Apple and Google on in-app purchases.
The pricing structure extends to multiple accounts. The first account linked to your Meta Accounts centre is billed at the standard rate. Additional accounts added to the same center incur an extra charge of £2 (web) or £3 (iOS/Android) per month.
Responding to UK Regulatory Guidance
According to Meta, this decision is a direct response to “recent UK regulatory guidance and following extensive engagement with the Data Commissioner’s Office (ICO).” The company will proactively notify UK users aged 18 and over about the availability of this ad-free subscription choice.
Ad-Free Across Your Meta Accounts
Subscribing to the ad-free option will eliminate advertisements across all facebook and Instagram accounts linked to your Meta accounts center, provided all accounts are covered by the subscription fee. Users who choose not to subscribe will continue to experience the platform with personalized advertisements.
