European TikTok & Instagram Alternative ‘wedium’ Launches Beta
A Berlin-based advertising agency is set to launch a beta version of “wedium,” a new social media platform, on March 25th, with a full public rollout planned for July. The platform aims to provide a European alternative to established networks like TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram.
Wedium distinguishes itself through a commitment to user safety and data privacy, according to company statements. A core feature is mandatory identity verification for all users who wish to publish content. Those who do not verify their identity will be limited to consuming content, a measure intended to combat bots, hate speech, and misinformation. The platform is designed to be hosted and operated entirely within Europe, ensuring compliance with the region’s data protection regulations, including GDPR, and shielding user data from the US CLOUD Act.
The launch comes amid growing debate in Germany and across the European Union regarding the regulation of social media, particularly concerning the protection of minors. In Germany, the governing CDU and SPD parties have advocated for fixed age limits for social media access, though the CSU has expressed reservations. At the EU level, leaders have recently discussed advancing proposals for stricter age verification measures, building upon the framework established by the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA aims to strengthen rules protecting minors online.
Wedium’s developers state the platform will operate without personalized algorithms designed to maximize user engagement. Instead, they aim to foster a sense of community and prioritize age-appropriate content, particularly for younger users. The platform also intends to offer a revenue-sharing model, allowing creators to be fairly compensated for their work. According to wedium.social, the platform seeks to address concerns about the prevalence of bots on other platforms, where they account for as much as 50% of traffic.
The platform’s creators position wedium as a means of breaking free from the dominance of American and Chinese social media companies, fostering a stronger European digital community built on trust and quality content. The company is currently seeking users to join a waitlist for the beta launch.
