European Fraud Probe: Mogherini Detained in EU Diplomatic Service Investigation

European Fraud Probe Targets Former EU ​Official mogherini

Brussels – Febuary ⁣12, 2025 – European authorities have launched a⁢ fraud ​investigation targeting Federica ‌Mogherini, the former EU High Representative for ​Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, according to sources familiar with the matter. ⁣The probe centers on allegations of improper financial dealings during her tenure as the EU’s top diplomat from 2014 to 2019.

Mogherini, 52, currently serves as rector of the⁤ College of Europe – a ‍postgraduate university specializing⁣ in the training of ​diplomats founded in 1949 to foster “a ⁣spirit of solidarity and mutual ⁢understanding between​ all the nations of Western Europe.” She also directs the European Union Diplomatic Academy and previously oversaw the European External Action Service (EEAS) during her five years as a European Commissioner.

The investigation ⁣is being conducted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), ⁣the⁤ EU’s independent public prosecution ⁢office⁤ responsible for‌ investigating and prosecuting crimes against the EU’s financial interests.

Prior to her role in Brussels, the Italian politician served six years in Italy’s ‍parliament and briefly⁣ held the position of Italy’s foreign minister​ in⁤ 2014. During her‌ time as High Representative, Mogherini played a leading role in the 2015 ‍negotiations with Iran on the nuclear deal, later abandoned by ​the ​Trump governance.

The EEAS, established in 2010, operates with‌ a substantial budget – ⁢€880.2 million (approximately $1.02 billion at current exchange ‌rates) ‌in 2024 – to execute EU international relations. Details of the specific allegations against Mogherini have not yet been publicly released. Further​ updates will be provided ⁣as the investigation unfolds.
