Poland Unearths Baltic Sea Oil Bonanza, Eyeing Energy Independence
Massive discovery could dramatically reshape nation’s fossil fuel reliance
Poland is poised for a significant boost in energy independence following the discovery of one of the largest oil and natural gas fields in the Baltic Sea. This find comes as the European Union continues to grapple with its reliance on Russian fossil fuels, despite efforts to diversify supply.
Historic Baltic Find
Central European Petroleum has announced that its Wolin East 1 well, located near Świnoujście on the German border, holds an estimated 22 million tons of crude oil and 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. This revelation has been hailed as a landmark moment for the Polish energy sector.

The company’s CEO, **Rolf G Skaar**, expressed enthusiasm: “Wolin East is more than just a promising deposit—it is a shared opportunity to unlock the full geological and energy potential of the Baltic Sea.”
Doubling Poland’s Reserves
Preliminary estimates suggest the Wolin East concession, spanning 229 square miles, could contain up to 33 million tons of crude oil, equating to 240 million barrels. The natural gas potential is also substantial, potentially reaching 27 billion cubic meters.
This discovery could more than double Poland’s current oil reserves, which stood at approximately 20.2 million tons in 2023. Such a find would be instrumental in bolstering the nation’s energy security and reducing its dependence on external fossil fuel suppliers.
Professor **Krzysztof Galos**, Poland’s Undersecretary of State and Chief National Geologist, told TVP that the deposit: “could prove to be a breakthrough in the history of hydrocarbon exploration in Poland, especially in areas still insufficiently explored, such as the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone in the Baltic Sea.”
Technological Advancement
The drilling operation utilized a jack-up platform in relatively shallow waters, with the Wolin East 1 well reaching a depth of approximately 8,900 feet. This success highlights advancements in offshore exploration technology.
According to the International Energy Agency, global oil demand is projected to reach 106 million barrels per day by 2028, underscoring the strategic importance of new domestic reserves (IEA, 2023).
This development marks a critical juncture for Poland, offering a tangible pathway toward greater energy self-sufficiency and a reduced exposure to volatile international energy markets.
