EU Demands Transparency from Tech Giants on Scam Prevention
The European Commission has issued requests for details to Microsoft,Google, apple, and Booking to assess thier efforts in protecting EU users from online scams. The Commission is seeking details on the measures thes platforms are taking to prevent fraudulent activities like fake banking apps and listings for non-existent accommodations.
“I can confirm that today (…) the Commission has sent a request for information under the framework of the Digital Services Law (DSA) to four online platforms to supervise and receive data on how they ensure that their services are not used by scammers,” stated Thomas Regnier, the community spokesperson for digital issues, during a press conference in brussels.
This action is considered “an essential step to protect users from the entire EU” and reinforces the responsibility of these platforms, according to the Commission. Importantly, this request for information does not currently indicate the start of a formal examination.
The request falls under the powers granted by the Digital Services Law (DSA), which aims to enhance digital security. It allows brussels to gather preliminary data before deciding whether to launch a formal procedure.
Should serious, unaddressed violations be discovered, the Commission could impose economic sanctions on the companies involved.
This move was foreshadowed by Henna Virkkunen, Vice President of the Commission responsible for Technological sovereignty, security and democracy, who told the Financial Times that a formal request had been issued to the four tech companies.
“We see that more and more online criminal actions are produced. We must ensure that the platforms really make all possible efforts to detect and avoid this type of illegal content,” Virkkunen emphasized.
