ESPN in Exploratory Phase With WWE Coverage

August 11, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

ESPN Weighs WWE Integration Strategy

The worldwide leader in sports remains in its exploratory phase regarding WWE programming, according to ESPN sports betting analyst and host Joe Fortenbaugh. During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Fortenbaugh outlined how the network is evaluating methods to bridge traditional sports fandom with sports entertainment narratives.

Navigating Match History Versus Human-Interest Angles

The central challenge facing the network involves figuring out what viewers want most from cross-promotional segments. The network is weighing whether audiences prefer deep dives into match history and preparation—such as a recent feature on Seth Rollins and his history with Roman Reigns—or broader human-interest angles that appeal to non-wrestling fans.

“If we sit down and we have an interview with Seth, which we did recently, it aired this morning about tonight’s match, do people want to hear about the match, the history with Roman, his preparation for the match? Or do you want to bring in a new audience that might not necessarily watch wrestling, that might not necessarily want to hear about the storyline, but could be interested in the fact that Seth’s a huge Bears fan?” Fortenbaugh stated during the interview.

Production teams hope to lower the barrier to entry for casual sports consumers by highlighting commonalities like shared sports allegiances. Connecting a performer’s fandom of traditional franchises like the Bears creates an immediate bridge for football viewers to cross over into following sports entertainment properties.

Peeking Behind the Curtain on In-Ring Athleticism

This exploratory process also extends to celebrating high-risk maneuvers and in-ring athleticism directly with veteran talent. Fortenbaugh pointed to recent interactions with other top performers to illustrate the dual nature of their current coverage style.

“Getting to know them a little bit, I think there are fans that really want to see the peek behind the curtain, and we’re trying to figure out the best way to marry the two for the viewers,” Fortenbaugh explained, noting that conversations involving high-flying sequences—such as CM Punk going through a table—allow analysts to nerd out over physical execution much like traditional analysts dissect game tape.
