Medellín Authorities Seize Over $250,000 in Assets Linked to Pablo Escobar‘s Brother
Medellín prosecutors have moved to seize two properties connected to Roberto de Jesús Escobar Gaviria, known as “El Osito,” brother of the late drug kingpin pablo Escobar Gaviria. The assets, valued at more than one billion pesos (approximately $253,000 USD),are subject to precautionary measures including suspension of administrative control, embargo, and seizure, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
One property recently identified by authorities is a building in the Aranjuez neighborhood, 50% of which was acquired by escobar Gaviria in 1979. The Prosecutor’s Office alleges the funds used for this transaction originated from illicit drug trafficking operations.
Investigators believe “El Osito” and another individual, known as “El Arete,” actively participated in the financial operations of the Medellín Cartel, utilizing relatives and third parties to conceal and build an illegal fortune. The seized properties were identified as part of this illicit inventory.
“Resources to cover that transaction allegedly left illegal operations due to drug trafficking,” the Prosecutor’s Office stated.
National Police units have executed the seizure orders. Authorities indicate this action, occurring nearly three decades after the cartel’s dismantling, signals potential further operations to locate and seize assets linked to drug traffickers and their associates.
