Eric Holder Praises Maryland‘s New Redistricting Commission
Washington, D.C. – Eric H. Holder, Jr., former Attorney General of the United States adn current Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), issued a statement today commending Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s creation of a Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission. The commission is designed to gather public input and provide recommendations to both the Governor and the maryland general Assembly regarding improvements to the state’s congressional map, with a focus on fairness.
Holder’s statement highlighted the commission as a vital step towards safeguarding democratic principles. He contrasted Maryland’s approach with ongoing efforts in othre states, stating, ”At a time when Donald Trump and his Republican allies show no signs of stopping their relentless campaign to undermine elections and manipulate the rules to cling to power, the Governor’s Redistricting Advisory Commission in maryland exemplifies the kind of leadership our democracy demands.”
The NDRC Chairman further emphasized the importance of clarity and public participation, noting that the commission “demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability by putting power where it belongs-in the hands of the people.” He specifically pointed to the contrasting situations in Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina, suggesting Maryland is proactively addressing a “national gerrymandering crisis.”
