Eric Dane Dies: ALS Battle, Final Message to Daughters & Tributes

Actor Eric Dane, known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” died December 7, 2025, after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), according to multiple news reports. He was 53.

Dane publicly announced his diagnosis in April 2025, and subsequently shared details about the emotional and physical challenges he faced. In a virtual panel discussion with I AM ALS, Dane described feeling overwhelmed by the disease’s progression, acknowledging moments where he felt inclined to withdraw. “I have no reason to be in a decent spirit at any time, on any given day,” he said, according to the New York Daily News. “I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying.”

Despite the difficulties, Dane expressed a determination to continue working as an actor. “I’m not about to concede my purpose for some disease. I just am not capable of doing that,” he stated, as reported by The News. He acknowledged the limitations imposed by ALS, noting his increasing reliance on a wheelchair and the loss of function in one arm, but emphasized his continued ability to utilize his intellect and speech. He indicated a willingness to focus on roles that directly addressed his condition, stating, “It’s going to be very difficult for me to play any other role where you don’t look at the 800-pound gorilla in the room – and I’m fine with that. I’m grateful that I can still work in any capacity.”

ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and eventual paralysis. According to the Mayo Clinic, the disease worsens over time. Dane’s openness about his experience aimed to raise awareness of ALS and its impact on individuals and families. He served as an ambassador for I AM ALS, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

Following the news of his death, friends of Dane have launched an fundraising effort to support his daughters, according to reports from HBVL. Adil El Arbi, a director who worked with Dane, also publicly mourned his passing, referring to the actor as a “brother,” as reported by HLN. Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters.
