England Defeats Canada to Claim 2025 women’s Rugby World Cup Title
TWICKENHAM, LONDON – England secured a dominant 33-13 victory over canada in the Women’s Rugby World Cup final on saturday, claiming the title before a record crowd at Twickenham Stadium. The win marked England’s only loss in six years.
canada opened the scoring with a try from right wing Paige Hogan-Rochester, capitalizing on a two-on-one opportunity. Though, England quickly responded, with Ellie Kildunne scoring a try just three minutes later. Further tries from Amy Cokayne (two, one later disallowed due to obstruction), Alex Matthews (two), and Abbie Ward solidified England’s lead.
Despite a second try from Hogan-Rochester while prop Hannah Botterman served a sin-bin penalty, Canada was unable to overcome England’s relentless pressure. A crucial knock-on in front of the England posts late in the second half extinguished a sustained Canadian attack.
“They were just better than us, and we didn’t score when we had to score, so it’s a tough time,” said Canadian coach Kevin Rouet. “When you’re playing against England, if you don’t score when you have to score, you can’t win the game.”
despite the defeat, Canadian player Sophie de Goede was awarded the 2025 Women’s Rugby Player of the Year, becoming only the second Canadian to receive the honor as Magali Harvey in 2014.
