Bellingham and Foden Omitted as Southgate Names England Squad with Saka Return
London – Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden have been left out of the England squad for the upcoming international fixtures, while bukayo Saka returns, manager Gareth Southgate announced today. The decision comes as Southgate prioritizes players consistently featuring for their clubs, with both Bellingham and Foden having experienced limited playing time recently.
Southgate indicated that Bellingham’s absence is particularly felt, describing the midfielder as “one of the best players in the world” and acknowledging England’s strength with him in the team. However, he emphasized the current selection is based on form, stating, “This is more about last camp and what we started to build.” He affirmed that a return to the squad remains open for Bellingham, Foden, Jack grealish, and Adam Wharton through strong club performances, but stressed that selection “will not be picked on reputation.”
Thomas tuchel, observing the situation, noted that Bellingham “has not gathered full rhythm yet” and “hasn’t finished one full match” since returning to the team.
Arsenal full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has not started a Premier League game this season, has been included, but Southgate cautioned that continued club appearances are crucial for maintaining his place. “To just be a good citizen in camp will not be enough to stay the whole year,” southgate stated, adding Lewis-skelly “have to perform at club level on a regular basis.”
