Employee Motivation: Food, Cleanliness, and Workplace Productivity

A current study commissioned by Sodexo Germany shows that healthy meals support the performance and concentration of employees (82 percent), while clean jobs increase their motivation (81 percent) and productivity (75 percent). The survey of 1,000 office workers emphasizes that factors such as meals and hygiene are increasingly considered crucial for modern employers.

The study reveals that around a quarter (24 percent) of the respondents are dissatisfied with the existing catering offer at the workplace. Only a third (33 percent) has access to a company restaurant, and only 15 percent are available in a company kitchen. A kiosk or a cafeteria is available in the building for about every seventh (14 percent).

The results open up great potential: if such catering offers are available, workers are easier to eat healthier than at home. According to the study, a healthier diet in the office leads to higher employee motivation. Warm meals also contribute to the increase in productivity and motivation in half of the respondents who consume them (51 percent).

Attractiveness for talents and economy

The catering offer also plays a role in the election of the employer: 64 percent of those surveyed take it into account when changing jobs. For almost a quarter (23 percent), an attractive catering offer even has a large to very big influence on the joben decision. According to the study, companies that cannot show an appealing offer are gambled away in the War for Talents.

In addition to meals, cleanliness at the workplace is also notable. 97 percent of those surveyed consider hygiene to be important in sanitary facilities. Employees of cleanliness in the company restaurant (94 percent), workplace (89 percent) and in conference rooms (68 percent) contribute a similar relevance.A clean workplace increases the satisfaction of employees by 91 percent.

The study emphasizes that investments in meals and cleaning can also pay off economically. Three out of four employees are convinced that this leads to less fluctuation and fewer days of illness (76 percent).Clean and well-kept jobs are also perceived as a sign of appreciation and a positive corporate culture. Managers also confirm the relevance: 83 percent of respondents with management duty state that healthy eating increases the performance of their teams, and 78 percent see it a valuable contribution to the employer brand.
