Barcelona, Spain – Emma Raducanu is embarking on a new phase of training with coach Francisco roig, aiming to elevate her foundational game and reduce reliance on opponent-specific tactics as she prepares for the 2026 season. The British number one has begun a month-long pre-season regimen in Barcelona, following recent gym work in London focused on recovery from a right foot injury.
Raducanu, 23, completed a career-high 50 matches this season, despite withdrawing from exhibition events in the United States due to light bone bruising. She expressed excitement about the potential impact of Roig‘s guidance, stating, “He wants me to focus a lot more on building a better Emma Raducanu and a better base level.”
Historically, Raducanu’s approach has centered on strategic exploitation of opponents’ weaknesses. However, she and Roig are now prioritizing the progress of a more dominant,self-sufficient game.”Its something that I don’t think I’ve necessarily done before,” Raducanu explained. “I’ve always been more tactical, more just having to exploit their weaknesses if they have any, and trying to be very crafty. And it works. But the ideal is that you don’t have to necessarily think too much about the other players - you can just go and execute your game and know that you can win.”
Roig’s focus isn’t on physical overhauls, but rather on refining technique, timing, and movement. “He’s trying to build a better quality, not necessarily by changing my physiological capacities, but by using better technique, better timing and better movement,” Raducanu said. A key objective is to gain greater control of matches, allowing her to “dictate the game a lot more” and potentially reduce the physical demands of her playing style.
