Elon Musk’s Tesla & SpaceX Launch $20B Chip Facility Project ‘TeraFab’

March 23, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Elon Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX are joining forces in a $20 billion venture to construct a massive computer chip facility, dubbed TeraFab, aimed at dramatically increasing the production of artificial intelligence chips. The announcement, made by Musk, outlines a plan to manufacture chips at a rate 50 times greater than current global output.

The TeraFab project will initially be located at Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, and will focus on producing two distinct types of chips. One will be tailored for Tesla’s expanding fleet of self-driving vehicles, robotaxis, and the Optimus humanoid robot. The other will be engineered to endure the extreme conditions of space, supporting Musk’s ambitions for AI data centers in low-Earth orbit.

Musk has previously articulated the potential cost benefits of space-based AI infrastructure. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this year, he stated, “The lowest-cost place to position AI will be in space, and that will be true within two years, maybe three at the latest.” SpaceX has since filed plans with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a network of satellite data centers, a move that aligns with broader industry interest in orbital computing.

The initiative comes amid growing investment in space-based AI infrastructure from other tech leaders. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently announced plans to facilitate the development of AI data centers in space, while Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon and Blue Origin, has suggested that orbital data centers could alleviate electricity demand constraints on Earth.

Musk framed the TeraFab project as essential to fundamental scientific understanding, stating, “In order to understand the universe, you must explore the universe. And that’s the motivation to accelerate humanity’s future in understanding the universe and extending the light of consciousness to the stars.”

The timeline for TeraFab is aggressive, with early production slated to begin next year and full-scale mass production anticipated by 2028. This schedule is notably faster than the typical three-year timeframe for establishing semiconductor production facilities.

According to Wikipedia, Elon Musk currently serves as Senior Advisor to the President, having held the position from January 20, 2025, to May 28, 2025, serving alongside Massad Boulos under President Donald Trump.
