Elizabeth Franz, a Tony Award-winning actress best known for her role as Mia Bass in the beloved series ”Gilmore Girls,” has died at the age of 84. Her husband, Christopher pelham, confirmed her death to The New York Times, following a battle with cancer.
Pelham spoke briefly to TNYT about Franz’s illness, without disclosing specifics about the type or severity of the cancer. Franz passed away at her home in Woodbury, Connecticut.
Throughout a distinguished career, Franz garnered international acclaim for her work on Broadway, appearing in productions such as “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “Morning’s at Seven.” She also built a strong presence on television, with guest roles in series including “Roseanne,” “Cold Case,” “Dear John,” and “Judging Amy.”
“Gilmore Girls” fans will remember Franz for her portrayal of Mia bass, the owner of the Independence Inn. It was at the Inn that Lorelai Gilmore and Sookie St. James began their professional partnership. Franz played Mia during the show’s initial seasons.
However, her portrayal was later replaced by actress Kathy Baker during a guest appearance in the seventh and final season. This casting change drew criticism from dedicated fans, who noted the significant difference in appearance and age between the two actresses.
