Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has unveiled “Digitopia,” an annual competition designed to unearth and champion creative talent in the information technology sector. The initiative boasts a significant prize pool of EGP 10 million, aiming to stimulate technological solutions for pressing societal challenges.

The competition invites innovators, ranging from primary school students to individuals up to 35 years old, to participate. Registration for the inaugural “Digitopia” contest is open until August 12, with the event running from August 1 through mid-October.

Key areas of focus for “Digitopia” include software solutions, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and gaming and digital arts. The competition is a collaborative effort spearheaded by the ministry’s Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA),the Information Technology Institute (ITI),the National Telecommunication Institute (NTI),and Egypt University of Informatics (EUI).

Communications Minister Amr Talaat emphasized that “digitopia” is a cornerstone of the ministry’s commitment to nurturing digital creativity and embedding a culture of innovation among students and graduates. He stated that the competition provides a vital platform for aspiring innovators to transform their concepts into practical technological solutions that contribute to the development of a “digital Egypt.”

“Digital creativity is a essential pillar in constructing a knowledge-based economy,” Talaat remarked, underscoring the ministry’s dedication to cultivating an environment that champions innovation and entrepreneurship. “The competition’s broad age range reflects a comprehensive strategy to identify talent early on, thereby preparing a generation equipped for creativity and innovation.”

The grand prize winner of “Digitopia” will receive EGP 1 million,with numerous other cash and in-kind awards totaling EGP 10 million also available. Participants will also benefit from specialized training opportunities with leading local and international technology firms.

Entrants will be categorized into four distinct groups: primary school students (grades 4-6), preparatory and secondary school students (grades 7-12), university students, and graduates up to the age of 35.

The competition will unfold in several stages, commencing with registration and introductory sessions. This will be followed by idea submission,the development of these ideas into tangible technological solutions,a rigorous judging process,and culminating in the declaration of the winners. A panel of esteemed experts and specialists in digital technology and innovation will oversee the judging.
