Egypt drops in FIFA rankings after home defeat to South Africa
Egypt dropped one spot in the FIFA world rankings following a 1–0 home defeat to South Africa on Sunday at Cairo International Stadium, ending a seven-year unbeaten home streak at the venue as kooora.com reported. Bosu Dethigani scored the game’s only goal in the 51st minute after capitalizing on a misjudgement by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier, leaving the Pharaohs with a damaging loss in their final preparation match of the international window.
Tactical Confusion and Substitution Drama at Cairo Stadium
Manager Hossam Hassan attempted to spark an offensive response in the 69th minute by preparing a double substitution that brought on Ahmed Sayed Zizo and Hamza Abdel Karim. According to kooora.com, as the administrative staff readied the changes, Mostafa Zico stepped forward to exit the pitch before Hassan noticed him, looked back at his staff in bewilderment, and asked aloud, “Who said Zico?” Hassan ultimately decided to keep Zico on the pitch while substituting Omar Marmoush instead.
The tactical shuffle failed to break down South Africa’s defense despite dominant spells of possession from the hosts. Alarabiya.net noted that the defeat marks Egypt’s first loss on home soil in over two and a half years, dating back to a 4–2 defeat against Croatia at the New Administrative Capital stadium in March 2024. It is Egypt's first loss at Cairo International Stadium since a 1–0 defeat to South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations in July 2019.
Egypt Drops in FIFA Rankings as Key Players Miss Match
Ylakora.com detailed the immediate impact on the FIFA global rankings, showing Egypt dropping one spot to 25th with 1,585.86 points after losing 6.22 points. Conversely, South Africa jumped six places to 48th with 1,468.88 points by claiming those exact ranking points. The Egyptian squad entered the match missing several key figures; Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Abdelmonem departed the camp early after requesting exemption from a prior fixture against South Sudan on artificial turf, while Haitham Hassan sat out due to injury, as reported by ylakora.com.
Before kickoff, South Africa manager Pitso Mosimane shared a public moment with the Pharaohs squad. Arabic.cnn.com reported that Mosimane, who managed Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly between 2020 and 2022, walked over to the Egyptian bench to greet players and embrace Ahmed Sayed Zizo. The match statistics highlighted a stark contrast in squad valuations. Youm7.com noted that Egypt’s total market value stood at approximately 96.15 million euros, nearly double South Africa’s squad valuation of 48.15 million euros.
