Ari Aster‘s critically acclaimed film, Eddington, will debut on HBO Max on Friday, November 14, with a linear television premiere scheduled for saturday, November 15 at 8 pm ET. The A24 release, which received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, offers a stark satirical look at the societal fractures exposed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Eddington stars Joaquin phoenix adn Pedro pascal in a genre-bending story set in Eddington, New Mexico, where a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor ignites tensions within the community. The film’s timely arrival on streaming comes as audiences continue to grapple with the lasting impacts of the pandemic and the rise of extremist ideologies, making it a relevant and potentially provocative viewing experience.
The cast also includes Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.
According to Deadline’s review, Damon Wise lauded Aster’s willingness to confront challenging themes, stating the film presents “a slice of history that we have yet to see properly shown on film, even though it happened only five years ago.” Wise further wrote that Eddington “rips the Band-Aid off” to expose the damage caused by groups like QAnon, 4Chan, and the Proud Boys, arguing their impact surpassed even that of the virus itself.
Aster wrote and directed Eddington, which was financed and produced by A24. He produced the film alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner.
