Education Cannot Wait Announces $2 Million Grant for Flood-Impacted Children in Pakistan
NEW YORK – November 8, 2023 – Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the global fund for education in emergencies and protracted crises, today announced a $2 million grant to address the urgent educational needs of children and youth affected by devastating floods in Pakistan. The funding will support immediate and sustained educational interventions for vulnerable children whose schooling has been disrupted by the disaster.
The grant, announced in partnership with the government of Pakistan and aid organizations, will directly benefit over 60,000 children and youth, prioritizing girls, children with disabilities, and those from marginalized communities. Pakistan experienced unprecedented monsoon rains and flooding in 2022 and 2023, impacting over 33 million people and severely damaging critical infrastructure, including nearly 27,000 schools. This new funding aims to restore learning environments, provide essential learning materials, and offer psychosocial support to help children cope with the trauma of the floods.
“The floods in Pakistan have created a profound education crisis, leaving millions of children at risk of dropping out of school,” said Yasmine Sherif, Director of Education Cannot Wait. “this new ECW investment will help ensure that these children are not left behind and that they have the prospect to continue their education in safety and with dignity.”
the funding will be implemented in collaboration with UNICEF and local partners, focusing on restoring damaged school infrastructure, providing teacher training, and accelerating access to quality education for the most vulnerable. ECW has been a long-term partner to Pakistan, previously allocating $11 million to support education in emergencies, reaching over 250,000 children.
