Austin Peay Softball Edges Tennessee Tech in Thrilling Extra-Inning Contest

Cookeville, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University’s softball team secured a hard-fought 7-6 victory over Tennessee Tech in eight innings,showcasing resilience and clutch hitting at the Tech Softball Field on Wednesday.

Samantha Miener pitched a complete game, earning the win for Austin Peay (34-11) with 8.0 innings of work. The Governors’ offense was a team effort, with seven different players recording hits. Kylie Campbell led the charge with two runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored.

Top Third Inning

After two scoreless innings, Raylon roach and Kayleigh Roper drew consecutive walks. Kylie Campbell then delivered a two-run triple, her seventh of the season, putting Austin Peay ahead 2-0. Macee Roberts followed with a sacrifice fly,scoring Campbell and extending the lead to 3-0.

Bottom Fourth Inning

Tennessee Tech responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run after a leadoff single and two subsequent hits, narrowing Austin Peay’s lead to 3-1.

Top Fifth Inning

Austin Peay extended its lead in the top of the fifth. Kylie Campbell walked, and Macee Roberts, Brie Howard, and Skylar Sheridan followed with singles. Sheridan’s single drove in Campbell, and Sammie Shelander added another run with a single, making it 5-1.

Bottom Fifth Inning

Tennessee Tech mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs with two outs. A two-RBI double started the rally,followed by a two-RBI single that tied the game at 5-5.

Top Eighth Inning

After scoreless sixth and seventh innings, the Governors took the lead in the eighth. With Skylar Sheridan on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule,a sacrifice bunt by Katie Raper advanced her to third. Sammie Shelander was then hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners. Kiley Hinton drove in both Sheridan and pinch runner Maggie Daughrity with a hit, giving austin Peay a 7-5 lead.

Bottom Eighth Inning

Tennessee Tech scored a run in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out single, but a groundout to Kayleigh Roper at shortstop ended the game,securing the victory for Austin Peay.
