Eindhoven medtech Innovation center Ushers in New Leadership as it Tackles Global Healthcare Challenges
Table of Contents
Eindhoven, Netherlands – The healthcare landscape is under immense strain, grappling with an aging population and critical staff shortages. In response, the Eindhoven Medtech Innovation Center (e/MTIC) is doubling down on its mission to accelerate healthcare solutions from concept to patient care. This commitment comes as the center undergoes a leadership transition, with Noortje Bax and Beatrijs van der Hout set to succeed Kees van der Klauw and Franklin Schuling.
e/MTIC, a unique collaborative ecosystem, brings together Eindhoven University of Technology, philips, Catharina hospital, Máxima MC, and Kempenhaeghe – a leading center for epilepsy and sleep disorders. For the past seven years, the center has fostered a dynamic habitat where research, technology, and clinical practice converge, supported by approximately 75 employees and over 100 PhD students. This has resulted in a robust innovation pipeline, evidenced by numerous patents and a thriving network of partners.
breaking Down Silos in Healthcare innovation
The foundation of e/MTIC rests on a crucial insight: innovation thrives when it’s embedded within clinical practice.Despite the fragmented nature of healthcare and research globally, and the often-limited access to vital data, e/MTIC has created a regional model that actively dismantles these barriers.
“What strikes me most is the enthusiasm with which people work together,” reflects Franklin Schuling, a founding father of e/MTIC. “I am impressed by the clinicians, specialists, PhD students, and Philips employees; how they have put their shoulders to the wheel within e/MTIC.”
A key focus for the center has been responsible data management, recognizing that healthcare innovation increasingly relies on medical technology and data processing. “Having a lot of data does not mean you can just put it into an algorithm,” cautions Kees van der Klauw. “It is significant to think carefully about how to do this safely and responsibly.”
From Research to Real-World Impact: The Healthdot Story
This commitment to safe and effective data utilization is exemplified by Healthdot, a remote patient monitoring patch developed by Philips and validated through e/MTIC’s collaborative network. The technology was later spun off into smartQare and has seen rapid adoption, notably at Catharina Hospital.
Healthdot demonstrates the power of the e/MTIC ecosystem to deliver practical solutions that address critical challenges – alleviating pressure on healthcare personnel and optimizing financial resources through the convergence of technology, streamlined processes, and dedicated people.
looking Ahead: Scaling Innovation and Expanding Partnerships
As e/MTIC enters its next chapter, the focus shifts towards scaling successful innovations beyond the Brainport region to a national level. Van der Klauw highlights the center as a prime example of successful public-private collaboration.
Schuling emphasizes the need to broaden the network further, incorporating data companies and international knowledge institutions to facilitate the necessary upscaling. The future of e/MTIC hinges on continued collaboration and a commitment to tackling global healthcare challenges with locally-driven solutions.
