Netherlands Could Hold Faster Elections After Government Collapse, Electoral Council Advises
The Hague, Netherlands – new elections could be held within three months of a cabinet’s fall, significantly faster than the current timeline, according to advice released today by the Electoral Council. The recommendation comes after criticism of the lengthy period between the collapse of the Schoof cabinet on June 3 and the eventual elections held on October 29.
Currently, the process for holding early elections can take up to five months. The electoral Council’s proposal hinges on municipalities and political parties maintaining a constant state of election readiness, even outside of scheduled voting periods, and a reduced emphasis on avoiding elections during holiday times.
The Council suggests streamlining the registration process for new parties and candidates by combining steps, and closing registration for party names and logos immediately following a government collapse – currently, parties can register year-round.
“Fundamental choices” are required to enable quicker mid-term elections, according to Electoral Council chairman Wim Kuijken. He emphasized the need for all involved parties to be perpetually prepared for an election, regardless of current plans.
The proposed changes would require investment and system adjustments, details of which the Electoral Council will outline in a forthcoming second recommendation.
