Houston Rockets forward Kevin Durant on Wednesday dismissed questions regarding the authenticity of a Twitter account allegedly operated by him, characterizing the ensuing controversy as “Twitter nonsense.” The account, with the handle @gethigher77, had previously been active but has since been set to private, according to multiple reports.
Durant’s comments came during a media briefing following the NBA All-Star break, where he was repeatedly pressed about screenshots circulating online that purportedly showed him criticizing current and former teammates. The alleged posts reportedly questioned the defensive capabilities of Alperen Şengün and used a derogatory term when referring to Jabari Smith Jr., as well as referencing past colleagues James Harden, Russell Westbrook, and Ben Simmons.
When asked directly if he was the individual behind the account, Durant offered no direct confirmation or denial. “I know you got to ask these questions but I’m not here to get into Twitter nonsense,” he stated, adding that his focus remained on the remainder of the NBA season. He further asserted that his relationship with Şengün and Smith Jr. Remained strong, stating, “My teammates know what It’s. We’ve been locked in the whole season. Enjoyed our break. Had a great practice today, looking forward to the road trip.”
This represents not the first time Durant’s use of burner accounts has arrive under scrutiny. In 2023, he publicly acknowledged having a burner account on the then-novel platform Threads, even challenging fans to locate him. Three years prior, Durant admitted to utilizing such accounts to respond to online criticism.
Rockets head coach Ime Udoka also addressed the situation, stating he intentionally avoids social media and prefers to concentrate on the team’s performance. “I don’t get into any of that,” Udoka said, referring to the online speculation. “I stay away from all the second-hand stuff.”
The controversy emerged over the weekend, quickly gaining traction on social media platforms.
