Duncan McIntyre founded Highland Electric Fleets to replace diesel buses

September 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Duncan McIntyre founded Highland Electric Fleets in 2018 after observing that standard diesel school bus tailpipe heights matched the face level of elementary school children waiting for transport. Operating across more than 100 U.S. cities, the company generates an estimated annual revenue between $4500萬 and $5000萬 by replacing diesel fleets with zero-emission electric alternatives.

From a Routine School Drop-Off to a Clean Energy Enterprise

The business model grew out of a daily observation during the school run. Duncan McIntyre, a father of three, noticed that his eldest son and other children standing at bus stops were routinely exposed to vehicle exhaust. Recognizing that the manufacturing capabilities, equipment, and technology required to transition fleets to zero-emission electric vehicles already existed, McIntyre set out to bridge the operational gap between public school districts and green infrastructure.

Bringing the concept to market required significant runway. McIntyre spent the first year and a half self-funding Highland Electric Fleets before securing its first municipal project. As operations scaled, the capital requirements shifted rapidly. The company relied on a mix of project financing and equity investment to build out its operational platform, procure heavy equipment, and manage regional rollouts.

Capital Structure and Rapid Fleet Scaling

Financial backing accelerated significantly in late 2024. Highland Electric Fleets announced a $1.5億 equity investment in December, supplemented by approximately $2億 in project financing to support its nationwide expansion footprint. This capital injection enabled the enterprise to service over 100 cities across the United States.

Growth metrics reflect rapid adoption curves in the clean transportation sector. McIntyre reported that the company has sustained a year-over-year revenue doubling rate over the past several years. Projections indicate that revenue will double again by 2027 as municipal demand for zero-emission transit solutions intensifies.

Logistical Complexities and Municipal Procurement

Future Targets and International Visibility

The operational roadmap targets expansion into numerous cities within the next 12 months. Beyond municipal scaling, leadership is pursuing high-profile institutional partnerships, including a stated corporate goal to secure sponsorship status for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

As the electric school bus market consolidates, Highland Electric Fleets positions itself as a dominant service provider in a niche that intersects public health advocacy, energy grid modernization, and commercial fleet management.
