Duke Lands 5-Star Recruit Asa Montgomery in Battle With UNC
Duke has secured the commitment of five-star small forward Asa Montgomery, landing the nation’s No. 3 prospect in the 2027 class by Rivals over North Carolina and several other programs, according to Rivals.
A Blue-Blood Battleground in Durham
The 6-foot-7 prospect from Hillgrove High School in Georgia announced his decision following an active recruitment cycle. Montgomery visited both Durham and Chapel Hill, alongside stops at Auburn, LSU, Georgia Tech, and UConn.
The recruitment battle carried extra intensity given North Carolina’s prominent place on Montgomery’s visit list. While the Tar Heels hosted the elite wing during his evaluation process, head coach Jon Scheyer’s program ultimately secured his pledge.

Montgomery’s commitment marks the third addition to Duke’s 2027 class. He joins four-star forward Kager Knueppel and Australian point guard Luke Paul in strengthening the incoming talent pipeline.
Diverging National Valuations
Recruiting services assign varying valuations to the incoming freshman. Rivals slots Montgomery third overall in the 2027 cycle.
Meanwhile, 247Sports’ composite rankings position him eighth nationally. CBS Sports noted that 247Sports’ standalone metric evaluated him even lower at No. 14.
Dominance on the Summer Circuit
Montgomery built his national profile during the Nike EYBL circuit. He led the league in scoring with 27.9 points per contest.
His summer production for team AOT also featured 10.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.9 blocks per game. That summer output followed a gold-medal run with the United States at the FIBA U17 World Cup.
Scouting the Blue Devils’ Newest Wing
Rivals scouting reports credit the wing prospect with advanced ball-handling abilities and floor-spacing range beyond the arc. He also displays consistent rim-finishing traits.
Those physical and tactical dimensions give Duke a multi-faceted piece to integrate into future rotations once Montgomery arrives on campus.
