Ducati‘s V21L Electric Racer Breaks Ground with QuantumScape solid-state Battery
Munich, Germany – Ducati’s V21L electric motorcycle prototype is now powered by a next-generation solid-state lithium-metal battery developed by QuantumScape, marking the frist time this technology has been integrated into a functioning electric vehicle. The proclamation, made at IAA Mobility 2023, signals a pivotal step toward wider adoption of solid-state batteries, promising increased range, faster charging, and improved safety for electric motorcycles and possibly, cars.
This collaboration between Ducati and QuantumScape isn’t simply about speed on the track; it’s a demonstration of a technology poised too reshape the future of electric mobility. Solid-state batteries address key limitations of current lithium-ion technology, offering the potential for considerably higher energy density and reduced fire risk. The triumphant integration into the V21L prototype validates years of research and development, bringing mass-market, affordable solid-state batteries closer to reality and impacting both consumer and commercial electric vehicle sectors.
The prototype motorcycle, a collaborative effort between Ducati and its electric motorcycle research arm, features QuantumScape’s 24-amp-hour (Ah) solid-state battery cells. These cells are designed to deliver a higher energy density than conventional lithium-ion batteries, potentially extending the range of electric motorcycles without increasing battery pack size or weight. Ducati plans to continue developing the V21L for on-track testing as the project progresses.
“This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards electrification,” stated Roberto Canè,Ducati eMobility Director. “Working with QuantumScape allows us to explore the boundaries of battery technology and develop electric motorcycles that offer uncompromising performance and range.”
QuantumScape CEO Jagdeep Singh added, ”We are thrilled to see our solid-state lithium-metal batteries powering a Ducati motorcycle. This is a testament to the potential of our technology to revolutionize the electric vehicle industry.”
The V21L prototype and its solid-state battery are currently on display at IAA mobility in Munich through September 17th. Further development and testing will continue, paving the way for potential future integration of QuantumScape’s technology into Ducati’s production electric motorcycles.
