Dublin Man Jailed for ‘Terrible Cruelty’ to Six Children in House of Horrors
Dublin Man Jailed for Nine Years After Years of Cruelty Towards Children
A 35-year-old man from Dublin has been sentenced to nine years and two months in prison for subjecting his six children to prolonged and severe cruelty, including physical abuse and neglect. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard details of the abuse, which took place between 2016 and 2020, and involved acts such as locking a child in a chest freezer and repeated physical assaults.
The court was told the family home was found to be in a filthy and cold condition, with evidence of rodents, flies, and faeces. Gardaí and social workers reported a lack of adequate food and clothing for the children, who were described as pale, dirty, and tiny for their ages. The youngest child, an infant at the time, required hospitalisation on multiple occasions due to neglect, including being admitted covered in dried faeces.
The man pleaded guilty to six counts of child cruelty after a proposal from the defence was accepted by the Director of Public Prosecutions. He similarly faced charges of sexually assaulting three of his children, the oldest girl and two boys. The court heard he has 20 previous convictions, primarily for minor public order offences.
The oldest boy, who was seven years old when the children were taken into care in January 2020, detailed the abuse he suffered in a victim impact statement delivered via video link. He recounted being locked in a bathroom, a closet, and a functioning chest freezer, as well as being repeatedly denied food as punishment. He also alleged physical assaults, including being kicked in the groin.
“You hated me for some reason. Told me I wasn’t part of your family. I don’t know why you were so cruel to me,” the boy stated in his impact statement. The eldest girl told the court, “No one helped us…All I wanted was a caring supportive dad. But no, I got a sh*tty one instead.” Foster parents of the younger children shared statements highlighting the lasting emotional impact of the abuse, with one noting a younger girl repeatedly asking why she wasn’t loved as a baby.
Judge Elma Sheahan acknowledged the resilience of the children and the “deep upset” caused by the disruption of their sibling unit. She emphasized the profound breach of trust and the repeated nature of the cruelty inflicted upon the vulnerable children. The judge also noted the aggravating factors of the case, including the exposure of the children to drug use and the misuse of family funds.
The man’s then-partner and the children’s mother, aged 34, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in February 2025 for neglect. The court heard she had been in a physically abusive relationship at the time of the offences and had since “changed her life” with a new partner. While acknowledging this as mitigation, the judge stated the neglect and cruelty towards the children was “very serious.”
A Garda investigation began in the summer of 2019 following a referral from Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, which had been involved with the family since 2016. Concerns raised by doctors, public health nurses, and school staff regarding the children’s welfare were initially addressed through safety plans, but these were not consistently followed. The children are now aged between six and 14 and are living in three different foster homes.
