Alarm on Secret Cell Phones: Greens Politician Clarifies warning
DRESDEN – A warning from Green Party politician Cornelia meier regarding the potential exposure of “secret cell phones” during germanys national warning day (Warntag) sparked confusion and prompted clarification. Meier advised individuals utilizing these devices – often employed by those experiencing domestic violence, stalking, or threats – to power them off during the nationwide alert test to avoid revealing their location.
The alert, issued via Instagram, highlighted a critical safety concern for vulnerable individuals relying on untraceable communication.These phones are intended to provide a lifeline for those at risk, offering a discreet means of contacting authorities or support networks. The annual Warntag, designed to test the country’s warning systems, could inadvertently expose the existence and location of these devices, perhaps endangering users.
Meier’s past work as Saxony’s Justice Minister focused on innovative resocialization programs within the state’s correctional facilities, including ecological farming and animal husbandry initiatives designed to provide inmates with meaningful work. She previously lauded a pilot project in Torgau, stating, “The pilot project of ecological agriculture in Torgau underscores the modern resocialization approach of the Saxon justice system. Land cultivation and animal breeding enable prisoners to engage in meaningful work, the results of which are immediately tangible.”
Responding to a query from Bild, Meier explained the intent behind her Instagram message. ”The hint in my Instagram story was directed at peopel who use a ‘secret phone’ for reasons of violence protection – for example, in situations of domestic violence, stalking, or threat,” she stated. “For these people, it can be life-saving that the location and existence of such a device remain hidden. Especially on warning day, such a device can attract attention if it is not switched off.”
