October 12, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Former Port Vale and Gillingham captain Doug Loft has died at the age of 39 following a medical emergency over the weekend, according to statements released by his former clubs. Loft made 196 appearances for Port Vale between 2009 and 2014 and later played 70 matches for Gillingham during a professional career that spanned League One, the Championship, and non-league football.

Career Beginnings and Time at Brighton

During his tenure with the Seagulls, Loft registered three appearances in the Championship—scoring once—alongside 46 additional outings in League One.

Captaincy and Promotion Success at Port Vale

Over five years in Burslem, Loft established himself as a central figure, scoring 19 goals in 196 matches. He collected the club’s player of the season award for the 2011-12 campaign and subsequently assumed the captaincy, guiding the team to an automatic promotion from League Two. Former manager Micky Adams remarked that no one could have been prouder to captain the club, noting that Loft performed his leadership duties with enthusiasm and endeavour, as reported by BBC Radio Stoke.

Port Vale stated that Loft will be remembered fondly for his achievements on the pitch and the commitment and leadership he showed throughout his time at the club. With the blessing of Loft’s family, Port Vale requested permission from the EFL for players to wear black armbands and hold a minute’s silence before kickoff at their weekend fixture against Chesterfield.

Stints at Gillingham and Later Clubs

Loft moved south in 2014, signing with Gillingham and immediately stepping into the role of team captain. He spent two seasons competing in League One at Priestfield Stadium, accumulating 70 appearances for the Gills. Gillingham’s official statement extended condolences to his wife, Laura, and their children, Freya and Amelie. Beyond his prolonged spells in Burslem and Kent, Loft’s professional journey included stints at Colchester United, Shrewsbury Town, Dagenham & Redbridge, Billericay Town, and Tonbridge Angels.
