Handball Bundesliga Boss Considers Football-Style Transfer Windows After Golla Controversy

October 12, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Handball national team captain Johannes Golla wants to leave MT Melsungen just months after joining from SG Flensburg-Handewitt, prompting Handball-Bundesliga president Uwe Schwenker to consider introducing fixed transfer windows modeled after association football.

Golla Seeks Return to Former Club for Mental Health

Golla announced his wish to return to his former club in early October, citing family reasons and a threat to his mental health. The 28-year-old pivot’s departure could happen during the current season, disrupting Melsungen’s multi-year roster planning built directly around him. The sudden announcement stunned the German handball community, drawing public commentary from prominent figures including Stefan Kretzschmar.

Kretzschmar blasted the current system as catastrophic, pointing to how far in advance deals are struck. Melsungen announced the Golla signing back in December 2024. Reigning champions SC Magdeburg confirmed in August that French player Thibaud Briet will join for the 2028/29 season. Meanwhile, Dika Mem’s impending transfer from FC Barcelona to Füchse Berlin for the summer of 2027 was made public as early as January.

League Leadership Considers Football-Style Windows

Schwenker addressed the controversy in an interview with Sport Bild, stating that the situation prompted him to put contract regulations on the agenda for an upcoming HBL board telephone conference. Schwenker stated that football gave itself rules with transfer windows, making it worth discussing whether such a system could work for handball.

Schwenker acknowledged that clubs negotiate contracts very far in advance, a period during which a player’s life circumstances can shift entirely. Beyond the logistical strain, the HBL president warned that long-term advance announcements damage club identification and fan trust. When supporters know a player belongs to another club for the next year or two while still wearing the current jersey, credibility suffers.
