donald Glover revealed he recently suffered a stroke,adding to a series of previously undisclosed health challenges that led to the cancellation of his “The New World Tour.” The actor and musician shared the information during a recent performance,detailing a cascade of medical issues he faced over the past year.
Glover’s revelation provides context for the tour’s abrupt end in October, initially postponed in September to address his physical health. The news also arrives as Glover prepares to step away from his Childish Gambino persona, a project spanning over a decade and five Grammy Awards. His health struggles appear to have factored into his broader reevaluation of priorities, including a newfound focus on family and a desire to move beyond the pressures of building a musical legacy.
“I broke my foot… They found a hole in my heart… so I had this surgery,and then I had to have another surgery,” Glover explained to the audience,according to reports. He did not specify when these events occurred, but indicated they preceded and contributed to his decision to cancel the tour.
Following the disclosure of his health battles, Glover encouraged his audience to embrace life. “They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” he said. “You got one life, guys.And I gotta be honest, the life i’ve lived wiht you guys has been such a blessing… You should be living your life how you want. if we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
Last July, Glover announced his intention to retire the Childish Gambino moniker, telling The New York Times, “It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done.’ It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.” He further elaborated, “I’m not 25 anymore, standing in front of a boulder like, ‘This has to move.’ You give what you can, but there’s beauty everywhere in every moment. You don’t have to build it. You don’t have to search for it.” Glover attributed this decision, in part, to the joy he finds in parenthood, stating, “When I put my son on my shoulders, I feel deep joy. That’s real. No one on their deathbed is going to look back and say, ‘Thank God I avoided being cringe.'”
