Formerly relying on marathon weekend taping sessions, the show now captures performances whenever an artist appearing at The Caverns expresses interest, allowing for more flexible production. According to Marketing Director Jeff Meltesen,The Caverns Sessions serves as a valuable possibility to extend the reach of both the artist and the venue through PBS broadcasts,complementing rather than competing with regular live programming.
The Caverns also hosts CaveFest, an annual fall festival celebrating bluegrass, jamgrass, and Americana roots music.meltesen describes it as a staff favorite, launched after the pandemic to showcase the venue’s new additions: a large outdoor amphitheater and an on-site campground.While distinct from individual cave concerts – offering a large, communal multi-day experience versus an intimate, underground setting – CaveFest further solidifies The Caverns’ position as a notable event space.
Founder Todd Mayo envisions a future for The Caverns focused on infrastructure improvements, expanded guest programming, and creating experiences beyond the typical concert. A key advancement is the ongoing extension of water and sewer service to Payne’s Cove, facilitated by a state grant, which will benefit both the venue and the surrounding community. Mayo also plans to utilize the venue’s 650 acres to develop hiking trails and other outdoor activities, even hinting at the possibility of an adult camp experience.
Currently, The Caverns offers over 20 luxury yurts and on-site camping for guests following most shows, amenities Mayo intends to expand upon. His overarching goal is to elevate the region’s profile as a destination for world-class live music by attracting major national and international acts seeking a unique and unforgettable performance space.
