Director Michael Mann Rushed to Hospital After Accidentally Shooting Himself in Leg at LA Gun Range
Film director Michael Mann was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a gun range, as reported.
The 83-year-old filmmaker was at The Range LA in West Los Angeles around 4:00 p.m. when the accident occurred on Halloween night. According to TMZ, Mann was trying to holster his firearm when it accidentally went off. Representatives for the director told Metro that the weapon accidentally discharged while holstered, resulting in a superficial, subcutaneous injury. The exclusive members-only indoor shooting club in West Los Angeles is a venue where Hollywood’s gun-loving elite often gather, with monthly membership fees ranging between $3,000 and $20,000 depending on the contracted plan.
LAPD Classifies Filmmaker Shooting as Training Accident
Emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department and officers from the LAPD arrived at the members-only facility following reports of the shooting. The LAPD confirmed that the filmmaker had no intention of harming himself and classified the incident as a training accident. Although he had allegedly refused to go at first, he was taken to the medical center by ambulance, accompanied by the police.
A representative for Mann issued a statement regarding his condition: On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released.
He has been an experienced target shooter for decades.
Production Status for Heat 2
Despite the injury and his age, Mann remains active in feature film production. Last month, Variety reported that Stephen Graham joined the cast of the upcoming sequel to Mann’s 1995 crime thriller Heat. The director is preparing to start filming the project. Production is scheduled to begin in January, and a source close to the production told Deadline that Mann’s minor injury will not impact the scheduled start date.

The director’s career spans over five decades, beginning with his 1979 feature debut The Jericho Mile and including acclaimed titles such as The Last of the Mohicans, Ali, Collateral, and his most recent feature, 2023’s Ferrari starring Adam Driver. Over his 50-year career, he has written for popular TV shows like Starsky & Hutch in the 1970s, created the crime drama Vegas starring Robert Ulrich in 1978, and served as an executive producer on Miami Vice before directing 14 movies to date, including Manhunter and Public Enemies.
