Switch 2 Screen Faces Harsh Criticism
Digital Foundry’s Analysis Reveals Potential Weaknesses
Early assessments of the upcoming Switch 2 screen suggest it could be a letdown, especially for gamers expecting top-tier visuals. Initial findings indicate the screen may lag behind modern standards, raising concerns about its overall performance.
Slow Screen Performance Raises Concerns
Technology experts at Digital Foundry, led by John Linneman, examined the Switch 2’s display. They found it to be “one of the slowest modern LCD panels” they’ve reviewed. This slowness could significantly detract from the gaming experience.
Linneman‘s tests of the screen’s responsiveness showed delays exceeding 30 milliseconds in some modes. Current industry standards aim for around 10 ms for acceptable performance, which places the Switch 2 in a less favorable position.
“In short, this is probably the same cheaper panel found in many simple tablets or Switch copies in the Chinese market, an outdated LCD technology with single-steamle delay, which combined with high resolution (especially at 4K, docked) is even worse and simply slow.”

Recent data from Statista indicates the average display refresh rate for gaming monitors is around 144Hz, which equates to roughly 6.9 ms response time, highlighting the Switch 2’s potential disadvantage compared to modern displays. (Statista 2024)
Potential Bright Spots
Despite the reported issues, the panel does offer some positives. Color rendering appears satisfactory, and the screen is reportedly both bright and energy-efficient. However, the poor input response could hinder image quality for some players.
Additional Details
The slow screen response may lead to reduced precision, poorer input reaction, and a feeling of sluggishness that isn’t present in OLED screens. These findings suggest the Switch 2 might employ an outdated LCD technology, perhaps similar to those used in low-cost tablets.
