DiCaprio, Penn & Del Toro Honored After “One Battle After Another” Success

Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, and Benicio del Toro were presented with the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s 2026 Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award on Monday evening, recognizing their contributions to Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, “One Battle After Another.” The award, presented at the Arlington Theatre, acknowledged the actors’ collective body of function and their collaboration on the action-thriller, which premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on September 8, 2025, before its wider release on September 26, 2025.

During a moderated discussion with film critic Pete Hammond, DiCaprio expressed his long-held admiration for his co-stars, stating, “I’ve waited my whole life to work with these guys,” according to reports from the event. Anderson, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the respect shared among the three actors, noting, “The fact that these fine gents are sitting together shows the respect they have for each other.”

“One Battle After Another” is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel, Vineland, and follows a group of ex-revolutionaries who reunite when their former adversary resurfaces, threatening the safety of one of their daughters. The film, which carries an R rating and runs for 2 hours and 41 minutes, features an ensemble cast including Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, marking Infiniti’s film debut. The film’s production involved the use of VistaVision, a cinematic format not widely utilized since the 1960s.

With a reported budget of $130–175 million, “One Battle After Another” represents Anderson’s most expensive film to date. It has grossed $208.3 million worldwide, according to available box office figures. The film received 13 Oscar nominations and secured 225 wins and 450 nominations in total.

The recognition at SBIFF comes as the film continues to garner attention for its complex narrative and the performances of its lead actors. The Hammond Cinema Vanguard Award has been presented annually by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to cinema.
