Diamond Diplomacy Documentary Has First International Screening in Tokyo

Diamond Diplomacy Documentary Has First International Screening in Tokyo

October 28, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

After a year on the U.S. festival circuit with stops at Mill Valley and Hot Springs, San Francisco-based filmmaker Yuriko Gamo Romer brings her feature documentary Diamond Diplomacy to the Tokyo Film Festival for its first international screening, deadline.com reported.

A Twelve-Year Archival Journey Through Baseball History

Produced between the United States and Japan, the feature traces over 150 years of shared baseball history between the two nations. Gamo Romer began the project more than twelve years ago, drawing an initial spark from the 1949 San Francisco Seals visiting Japan during the postwar occupation as a goodwill gesture sent by General MacArthur. The scope expanded as Gamo Romer uncovered connected histories ranging from baseball’s arrival in Meiji-era Japan and Babe Ruth’s 1934 tour to World War II and modern stars like Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani. The narrative centers on Masanori “Mashi” Murakami, the first Japanese player in Major League Baseball, and Warren Cromartie, who starred for the Yomiuri Giants.

Prior to completing the feature, the production released a short titled Baseball Behind Barbed Wire in 2023, focusing on the World War II Japanese American incarceration story. Marc Smolowitz, a producer on the film alongside Gamo Romer and Loi Ameera Almeron, noted that the short served as a festival success that kept communication open with funders while the feature scaled up.

Rebuilding Production After National Endowment for the Humanities Cuts

The production faced a major financial hurdle in its final year when the Trump administration canceled more than 1,400 previously approved National Endowment for the Humanities grants—cuts that a U.S. court later ruled unconstitutional. Diamond Diplomacy had received substantial development and production grants from the agency before the funding was pulled.

Rather than stalling, Gamo Romer spoke publicly about the controversy on NPR. That public advocacy attracted U.S.-Japanese diplomat Glenn S. Fukushima, who heard the interview and boarded the project as an executive producer. Fukushima helped fill funding gaps alongside Steven Okazaki, Jacqueline Glover, and Mari Nakachi.

For archival footage, the filmmakers dug into the MLB archives to explore U.S.-Japanese history.

International Distribution and Upcoming Screenings

Strand acquired North American distribution rights for the film in May. For the Japanese release, the producers secured a local distribution deal with Wondergenic, planning a launch across at least 60 screens in April. The Tokyo Film Festival screening serves as a homecoming for Gamo Romer and runs until November 4.
