Denmark has banned all civilian drone flights nationwide ahead of a crucial European Union summit focused on defense and the war in Ukraine, responding to a recent surge in unexplained drone activity. The ban, enacted Tuesday, will remain in effect until further notice, according to a statement from the Danish Transport Authority.
The move comes as Denmark, a key NATO member, seeks to bolster its security posture amid heightened geopolitical tensions. Mysterious drone sightings near critical infrastructure – including Copenhagen Airport and military installations – have rattled authorities and prompted investigations. The upcoming EU summit, scheduled to take place later this week, will address increased defense spending and coordinated strategies to support Ukraine.
Denmark’s Transport Authority cited security concerns as the primary reason for the ban, stating that the unexplained drone activity poses a risk to aviation safety and critical infrastructure. The ban applies to all drones regardless of size or purpose, with limited exceptions for law enforcement and emergency services.
Further strengthening defenses, Denmark recently launched the “Eastern Sentry” mission, designed to enhance security on Europe’s eastern flank following reported Russian drone incursions into Polish airspace. germany has pledged to provide Denmark with ”Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems” - utilizing radar, optical, and acoustic technology - at Denmark’s request, as reported by the Associated Press. Sweden has also committed to lending Denmark an anti-drone system, though specific details have not been disclosed.
