Democrats Win Control of US Congress as Markets Rally on Trump’s Cooperation Signal

Wall Street Rallies as Trump Signals Cooperation After Democratic Midterm Sweeps

U.S. stocks surged on November 4, 2026, after President Donald Trump signaled a willingness to work with Democrats, easing fears of political turmoil following a dramatic midterm election where the opposition party captured control of both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 1,500 points, or 3%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite each gained more than 1%.

Voter Discontent Drives Congressional Flip

The Democratic Party capitalized on widespread voter dissatisfaction regarding inflation, tariffs, AI data centers, and the ongoing U.S. war with Iran to reshape the legislative branch. While forecasters in the weeks leading up to the November 3 elections heavily favored Democrats to retake the House, the Senate battle was projected to remain tight. Instead, Democrats quickly flipped Republican-held Senate seats in North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Texas, Kansas, and Iowa. This swept the party past the 51-seat threshold in the 100-seat chamber, according to The Associated Press. The AP later called the House for Democrats after the party surpassed 218 seats, marking a much faster tally than the eight-day delay seen in both 2024 and 2022.

Bipartisan Signals Calm Equity Markets

Financial markets initially reacted with sharp overnight losses as Democratic victories in gubernatorial races across data center-heavy states like Texas and Georgia heightened concerns over impending restrictions on AI infrastructure. However, trading floors reversed direction after President Trump stated he expected to work well with Democrats. Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets, told CNBC that the market rebound was in part due to the president’s initial tone and reaction to the results, noting that political gridlock has historically favored equities. Data compiled by Quartz indicates that the S&P 500 has finished higher in the 12 months following every U.S. midterm election since 1950, averaging gains of roughly 15% as political uncertainty recedes.

Wall Street rallies after midterm elections

Investors Alter Tech and Defense Strategies as Power Shifts

The shift in congressional power immediately rippled through specific industry sectors, altering investor strategies across technology, defense, and energy. Amazon and Microsoft shares rallied on expectations that potential restrictions on new data centers would ultimately benefit tech giants possessing established computing capacity. Conversely, shares of Nvidia, CoreWeave, and various power producers retreated alongside defense contractors including Northrop Grumman, RTX, and Lockheed Martin. Meanwhile, solar and clean-energy shares advanced as investors priced in a more receptive legislative environment under a Democratic-controlled Congress. Oil prices dropped more than 3% as traders bet that the shifted political conditions could accelerate an end to the Iran conflict.

White House and Party Reactions to Defeat

Administration officials offered starkly differing assessments of the factors driving the midterm losses. Vice President JD Vance attributed the defeat directly to foreign policy pressures, writing on X that the U.S. war with Iran caused many 2024 supporters to switch their allegiance to Democrats. President Trump maintained that the conflict was necessary to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and asserted that he would have altered nothing regarding the military campaign.
