Brent crude futures drop below 0 amid US midterm results

Brent crude futures drop below $100 amid US midterm results

November 4, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Brent crude futures plummeted by more than $5 per barrel on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, dropping below the key $100 threshold as investors weighed the results of the US midterm elections against potential diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East. Cairo News channel reported the sharp market shift as traders reacted to changing politics and ongoing mediation efforts.

Diverging Price Decliners Across Global Benchmarks

The intraday sell-off erased substantial gains across major energy contracts. Brent crude dropped 4.63 percent, or $4.80, to settle at $98.80 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate fell 4.51 percent, or $4.33, to close at $91.76 per barrel. Anadolu Ajansı reported an even steeper drop, with Brent touching $96.39 and WTI sliding to $89.79 per barrel. In other contract sessions, Brent crude futures declined by $1.92, or 1.85%, to $101.68 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate futures fell by $1.75, or 1.82%, to $94.34 per barrel, following an earlier gain of about $1 earlier in the day. The resulting spread between the two primary benchmarks hovered near $7.

These figures contrast sharply with valuations from earlier in the week. Brent closed at $104.77 on Monday and $113.43 on Friday, while WTI stood at $96.46 and $104.12 respectively over the same prior sessions. Before today, Brent settled at $103.60 on Tuesday, marking its lowest level since October 7, while WTI closed at $96.09, its lowest level since October 14. Despite the sharp correction, year-to-date returns remain firmly positive, with Brent up roughly 63 percent and WTI up approximately 60 percent.

Traders Price Geopolitical Impacts of US Midterm Elections

Market participants scrambled to price in the geopolitical implications of the US midterm elections. Democratic victories in both the House and the Senate stripped Republicans of their congressional majorities. Vice President JD Vance acknowledged that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East contributed significantly to the Republican electoral setback. President Donald Trump told the Financial Times that the United States had no immediate plans to strike Iran, dampening immediate supply disruption fears.

Simultaneously, Qatari mediators hosted delegations in Doha to broker a sustainable cessation of hostilities and discuss the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Mubasher noted that while shipping intelligence from Vortexa indicated October Gulf crude, condensate and refined product exports averaged 17.1 million barrels per day—down from 18.9 million in September but still sitting at roughly three-quarters of pre-conflict levels—traders remained jittery. A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran and Washington remained distant from a formal accord, while a US official confirmed limited defensive strikes on Qeshm Island targeting surface-to-air missile batteries.

Supply Data Adds Conflicting Signals to Trading Floor

Supply data added conflicting signals to the trading floor. That reduction heavily outpaced a Reuters poll of eight analysts that had projected an inventory build of roughly 880,000 barrels. Concurrently, gasoline stockpiles grew by 1.43 million barrels, whereas distillate inventories fell by 1.19 million barrels.

Saxo Bank analyst Ole Hansen pointed out that the ongoing recovery in Middle Eastern crude flows is beginning to pressure spot freight rates. That normalization should eventually help restore refinery margins and lower consumer pump prices, though delayed rebounds in refined product exports mean retail relief will take time to materialize.

Wall Street Forecasts Versus Current Spot Valuations

The sudden correction brought spot prices much closer to consensus institutional estimates, though several prominent banks had projected higher year-end targets. Goldman Sachs previously set its year-end Brent target at $105, while UBS and ANZ analysts modeled ranges between $105 and $110 per barrel.

Traders now await official Energy Information Administration figures alongside monthly employment data to determine the next directional catalyst. Any unexpected escalation in maritime transit routes or sudden stalls in diplomatic channels could instantly restore risk premiums across global energy markets.
