Democrats Secure Majorities in House and Senate After Midterms
Democrats have captured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate following a sweeping midterm election that reshaped control of Capitol Hill and handed President Donald Trump a severe legislative check. The sweeping wins give the party effective veto power over presidential nominations and judicial appointments for the remainder of Trump’s term.
According to The Irish Times, Democrats secured majorities in both the House and Senate, capturing control of both chambers.
Rebuke Across Heartlands
Voters delivered a stinging rebuke to the Republican Party across traditional heartlands and competitive battlegrounds. The New York Post detailed how Democrats flipped deep-red states including Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, South Carolina, and Texas, alongside multiple district pickups in the House. Incumbent Sen. In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews took down Darline Graham in the seat the late Sen. Lindsey Graham had held for more than two decades, while Josh Turek won in Iowa.

In Texas, state Representative James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton. Gina Hinojosa unseated Republican Governor Greg Abbott to become the state’s first Latina governor and the first Democrat to occupy the governor’s mansion since 1990. Talarico defeated Paxton despite more than $200 million from SpaceX CEO Musk to stop him, with Talarico telling supporters, We must get big money out of our politics, so no billionaire or trillionaire can buy our elections. We must unrig this economic system that only benefits the top one percent,
and adding, The real fight in this country is not left versus right. It is top versus bottom.
Hinojosa defeated Abbott after blaming him for the rapid buildout of data centers across Texas, saying the governor put Big Tech interests ahead of local communities. In North Carolina, Roy Cooper told supporters that North Carolinians will always matter more than the billionaires and the insiders.
Annie Andrews told supporters after winning her Senate race at an election night watch party in Charleston, Under winner-take-all Electoral College math, there is no plausible path — none whatsoever — for the GOP presidential nominee to win 270 electoral votes without carrying Texas.
Historic Breakthroughs on the Ballot
The night also marked several notable historic breakthroughs. Michigan elected Abdul El-Sayed to the Senate, making him the first Muslim U.S. senator after he defeated former Republican congressman Mike Rogers.

In Georgia, Bottoms is also the first Democrat-elected governor in more than 25 years.
Dow Futures Fall as Tech Scrutiny Looms
Markets and international partners reacted swiftly to the shifting balance of power in Washington. Markets reacted and Dow futures fell and S&P 500 futures slipped Tuesday evening as the scale of Democratic gains became clear, raising the prospect of a more adversarial Congress that is likely to intensify scrutiny of tech companies and the AI data center build-out. Prominent Silicon Valley executives had poured hundreds of millions of dollars into backing Republican candidates before the vote. Greg Casar, the Texas Democrat who chairs the Progressive Caucus, stated after Democrats were projected to win the House, The House Democratic majority must make it a top priority to protect Americans’ jobs, freedom, and lives from AI billionaires,
adding, AI company CEOs should be called to testify under oath.

In Israel, political opposition leaders utilized the election results to criticize Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Centrist opposition leader Yair Lapid similarly asserted that Israel could no longer afford Netanyahu’s continued tenure.
